The Gottman Method for Couples Therapy

sound relationship house; couples counseling

What is the Sound Relationship House?

The Gottman Method was created by Drs. John and Julie Gottman. Their method is based on their many years of research on couples and their Sound Relationship House Theory. Treatment begins with a thorough assessment of the relationship. This includes a conjoint session, followed by individual interviews with each partner, and then completion of an online questionnaire called the Gottman Relationship Checkup. Interventions are research-based and focus on issues such as improving friendship and intimacy, communication and conflict management skills, and creating “shared meaning” within the relationship. Other issues that can be addressed in couples therapy include negotiating roles, preparing for and/or adjusting to parenthood, or recovery after betrayal.
